The 2025-2026 school year is my second as a BTA Building Representative for John Kennedy. I am honored to represent you as a part of the BTA Executive Council. I have been a Reading Specialist in the Batavia City School District for 20 years and experienced the many shifts in expectations, positions and buildings that have occurred throughout that time (sometimes all in 1 school year). I taught at the Middle School for 16 years and was moved to John Kennedy with the budget cuts made in 2020. I am also a mom of college age twins so I fully understand the juggling necessary for working parents.
In my role as a representative, I utilize my experience and knowledge from my time in both buildings, working with multiple administrators and being a working parent will allow me to represent classroom and special area teachers; as well as the many different interventionists that are members of the Batavia Teachers’ Association at JK. It is my hope that through this position I can continue to assist my colleagues in ensuring that JK continues to be a building that supports and empowers each other, so that we can all continue to do what is best for our students.

Nick is currently a Social Studies teacher at Batavia Middle School.

Melanie Case has been a teacher at Batavia Middle School since 2016 and has proudly served as a building representative since 2021. During her tenure, she has served on the Communications, APPR, and Schedule C committees. She teaches music and is currently the chairperson for her department.

Charlene Symula is a Batavia Middle School Representative. Elected to the position in 2021. She is dedicated, and diligent when representing the teachers she works with at the Middle School. She is there to support union members in any situation. She is part of the board for the Genesee County Teacher Center. It is her job to make sure everyone is aware of the different programs that the Teacher Center produces. Charlene Symula has been a proud Union member since 2000. During that time, she has seen many people come and go in the district but the overall membership of this district has made it worthwhile to be a representative.

Christopher is currently a Career and Technology Education teacher at Batavia Middle School.

I have proudly represented my colleagues at BMS for the past 14 years as a building representative. Throughout that time, I have consistently attended the NYSUT Winter and Summer Leadership Conferences. I have also served on the negotiations committee for the past several years, including during the current contract negotiations.
It has been my privilege to represent BTA at the Committee of 100 for the past seven years, as well as to serve as a member of NYSUT’s State and Local Women’s Committee. In 2023, I was honored to receive the Western New York NYSUT Leadership Award in recognition of my hard work and dedication to the union and my role as a building representative.
I am also the NYSTRS Delegate for the union, where I keep members informed of NYSTRS updates and assist anyone with retirement-related questions.
